R. N. Cohen is a local Maine artist who thoroughly loves this beautiful state, and his paintings show it. He has lived here all his life and loves the four seasons. His paintings depict a cold snowy day on a Maine farm, the crisp air and warm sun beating down on the fall pumpkins. What could be better than a cup of pier french fries at Old Orchard Beach in the summer or a cruise out to one of the many islands in Casco Bay in the spring?

These years have been exciting for Robert. He has opened a new gallery at 425 Fore Street - a larger gallery with more windows to display his prints and original paintings. After 8 years on Exchange Street, this has been a very big move. Robert still hopes to do a lot of his paintings right at the gallery where people can walk in and see his work in progress. He does enjoy painting on location also.
Robert not only paints scenes of Maine and New England, he has also travelled to Europe and has produced quite a collection from Italy and France. His paintings of Venice and Paris have been most popular. In fact, one of his paintings of a Paris bistro is featured on the cover of the "Portland Dine Around" for 2001, and his painting of the tree at Monument Square was chosen the official City of Portland season's greeting card for 2001.

All the art work in the gallery is done exclusively by Cohen. He display his originals, which are primarily watercolor and gouache, limited edition prints, Giclée prints, cards, his calendar, and this year he has added magnets of his art work.
"I have been blessed in that I have been able to make a living for my family, doing what I love to do - my art. I do the paintings that I want to do, and my customers and collectors seem to like them. I work in a traditional style but have my own way of painting that makes my work different from other artists. I learned a long time ago that you don't have to be better that other artists, just as good as you can be and be willing to work hard, because no matter how good you are, without doing the work, you cannot be successful. For me, painting is what it is all about, and the joy I get when someone likes my work makes it worthwhile."
